Avonome is the story of Hilda Avonomemi Moses, born in 1937, in the remote village of Etunor, a settlement in Ighara, Edo state. She disappears without a trace only to reappear in a cemetery in recent times, still unchanged, with no memory of who she was or where she had been all this while, except a knowledge of her name, a mysterious companion and an unbelievable gift – the ability to see spirits.

I think Avonome's biggest strength is the world building. Although it's African at its core I can tell that they writers have borrowed from various myths from around the world and it's interesting to see how the whole thing meshes together. At times I found the story a bit confusing but by issue 7 I see how it all comes together. Also, the visuals are insane especially issue 7. I really can't wait to see where they go with this but this is shaping up to be a tale of epic proportions.

    Cons

The storytelling was a bit confusing at times. The main character spends a lot of time in a limbo state and during this period it feels like not much is going on. However, I'm basically nitpicking I still really enjoyed this comic.

At the time of this review, this is my best African comic. The art is amazing. The story is genuinely intriguing. The combat so far has been nice. The main character is not a 2-dimensional girl that feels like she was written just to prove a point, but is actually well developed. There are subtle jokes and references to modern day Nigerian pop culture. Overall, I consider this a must-read. I mean, if you're on this site, and you're not going to read Avonome, what did you come here looking for?

    Cons

The creators haven't been able to pump out new issues as regularly as I would like. I would totally love if they could do a new issue each month.
