Yohancé follows a Master Thief who inadvertently finds himself at the center of an Intergalactic War. He subsequently gets swept up in an epic adventure as the curtains of War reveal ancient conflicts and shatter his world. An epic Space Opera with a purely African aesthetic, Issue 1 is also the first installment in the 5-part Yohance Vol. 1 Series.
One review on “Yohance: The Ekangeni Crystal”
If you look up "Afrofuturism" in a dictionary, you should see a picture of Yohance. Every single thing in this comic is inspired by African art, craft, architecture and design patterns, even though the comic is set in the distant future. The titular character is an inter-planetary bounty hunter who lives in his Chiwara inspired spaceship with his crew of AI creatures. Every character has an African name. Every building has African print/textures on them. Every vehicle is inspired by African craft. Every weapon is a futuristic version of an actual African weapon. The graphics are so good, if this was a game, it would be competing for best looking game of the year, even in this HD era. I found the realistic faces jarring sometimes though, as 2 of the characters in the comic are in the likeness of the creator and his wife. Only the first issue in the 5 part series has been released, so it's too early to give a verdict on the story, but based on the art, action and pacing in issue 1, this has the potential to be a masterpiece, and is definitely one of the best comics of 2016 visually by any standard.
